Summary

For years, rumors of the “Marsh Girl” haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet fishing village。 Kya Clark is barefoot and wild; unfit for polite society。 So in late 1969, when the popular Chase Andrews is found dead, locals immediately suspect her。

But Kya is not what they say。 A born naturalist with just one day of school, she takes life's lessons from the land, learning the real ways of the world from the dishonest signals of fireflies。 But while she has the skills to live in solitude forever, the time comes when she yearns to be touched and loved。 Drawn to two young men from town, who are each intrigued by her wild beauty, Kya opens herself to a new and startling world–until the unthinkable happens。

In Where the Crawdads Sing, Owens juxtaposes an exquisite ode to the natural world against a profound coming of age story and haunting mystery。 Thought-provoking, wise, and deeply moving, Owens’s debut novel reminds us that we are forever shaped by the child within us, while also subject to the beautiful and violent secrets that nature keeps。

The story asks how isolation influences the behavior of a young woman, who like all of us, has the genetic propensity to belong to a group。 The clues to the mystery are brushed into the lush habitat and natural histories of its wild creatures。

A book that will stay with me forever。 Thinking of Kya, her shack and the gulls will always bring me to a place of peace and serenity along with the marshland that raised her。 One of the best coming of age stories I’ve ever read。 It felt like a privilege to read this。 From coming of age, to romance, to murder mystery and more- what a wonderful book。

I could see how this would be everyone’s favorite book, and while I found it very lovely and gripping, it wasn’t my favorite。 I loved Kya as a character。

Carolyn Connors

Beautiful melancholic tone; full of references to nature。 Not quite 5 stars though。

Alexa Fyle

Great book with a very unique setting and point of view。 A bit of a slow read but still suspenseful。

This book shows both the good and bad sides of humanity。 I can't say enough good about this book。 I won't wade into all the aspects of this book because the author does this superiorly。 I will say that this is A MUST read book。 To all those who left bad reviews, I ask that you re-exam what part of your psychy rejected this manuscript。 This book shows both the good and bad sides of humanity。 I can't say enough good about this book。 I won't wade into all the aspects of this book because the author does this superiorly。 I will say that this is A MUST read book。 To all those who left bad reviews, I ask that you re-exam what part of your psychy rejected this manuscript。 。。。more

I started this book a little skeptical, thinking it would be a cringey coming of age love story。 But boy oh boy 🙏🙏 this was some of the loveliest poetic writing I’ve read, and the plot really hooks you。 You really get inside Kya’s head。 Although I did think the dialogue was a little weird, and a little jarring too, but for the most part I really enjoyed it and it didn’t bother me too much。 This was one of my favourite books。 Definitely recommend。

Karen Lee

Exquisite writing。 Couldn’t put it down。 Can’t wait to read her next book。

I thought that this was a story brilliantly told。 Through the words of the story I can imagine this happening。

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5This book is incredible。 I loved it from the first chapter。 The writing is beautiful and I found Kya’s story to be so frustrating, heartbreaking, and genuine。 I thought I had figured out the ending several times, and was still so surprised in the final chapter。 This is for sure a Top 10 favorite book of mine now!! I wish I had read it sooner!!

I know many people who loved this book when it was first published。 I also liked it a lot with a very different story and a few plots going on。 It was both depressing and inspiring。

Linda Watson Byak

I enjoyed this book although the reading became tedious at times。 There were some interesting twists and turns in the story and I enjoyed the character build。 However, because of all the hype on this book I expected a better read than what I think it turned out to be。

Jean Burke

Kept my interest, well researched and beautifully written。

This was a fascinating story with a well-developed plot and interesting characters。 The main character is a young girl who experiences loss, heartbreak, and independence。 Owens' writing style was very enjoyable to read and visualize the events unfolding in the marsh that Kya called home。 Without giving away any spoilers, I will say that this story had an ending that made my jaw drop。 This was a fascinating story with a well-developed plot and interesting characters。 The main character is a young girl who experiences loss, heartbreak, and independence。 Owens' writing style was very enjoyable to read and visualize the events unfolding in the marsh that Kya called home。 Without giving away any spoilers, I will say that this story had an ending that made my jaw drop。 。。。more

That was so good! Slow start but was absolutely hooked by the second act and couldn't put it down。 Definitely got a bit teary at parts too。 Such good prose that built up a completely immersing landscape, and had really well-done North Carolina dialect voice (as far as I can tell as a British person。。。)。 That was so good! I had high expectations for this book, not my usual style and it didn’t disappoint however the ending was a little predictable for me which is why i gave it 4 stars。 I loved the descriptive writing in this book, definitely worth a read。

Gina

I loved this book & didn’t want it to end! Beautifully written!

Originality, heart breaking, curiosity, suspense, and surprise, that’s how I felt reading this book。 I read this book for my book club。 I probably would have stopped reading since I like romance novels best as my choice, however I set a goal to finish the whole book in record time to see how the story progressed and ended。 It was very sad, writhing with suspense towards the end a twist of surprise to its final pages。 I gave it a four rating for originality and surprise。
